Preaching Prep And Nerves
SPEAKER_01On one of the other podcasts that I was listening to, Kelly, you uh had asked the question is this like a meshup of like She Wakes music and um this a life's lesson music? And I said and and I wanted to answer the I did answer the question to my radio. Yes, Kelly, it is a mesh up, Duncan.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you said to your actual radio.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, to the actual radio and too.
SPEAKER_03Like talking to the TV when they can't hear you.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, yes, Kelly, it is actually a mesh up. Duncan took both of those audios out and uh did what Duncan does. And so it was good stuff. Well, anything from your sermon last week that you'd like to finish this in the podcast from chapter uh nine? So good. She's just glad it's over.
SPEAKER_03No, that's you're like threw me for a little. I was like, I'm not prepared, Sean. I'm not prepared.
SPEAKER_01I heard your tag team with your hunting. In two weeks.
SPEAKER_03Wait, what? I'm just kidding. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's like, I'm already like, I just said no, just give me a few more weeks.
SPEAKER_03Like I had like nine weeks to prepare for Sunday, which I need all the nine.
SPEAKER_01So every nine weeks you're good then.
SPEAKER_02This is what I was saying to myself too. Like, I've had nine weeks to prepare as well. Yeah. And it's taken me every bit of that. But Pastor does it every way.
SPEAKER_04Well, here's the thing.
SPEAKER_03So I told Sean not long ago, man. I saw this stat. It's like it takes like a thousand and like fifty times to be a professional at something. And so obviously Jamie's spoken in front of people more than that. That's right. I'm at like like ten percent of that.
SPEAKER_02I'm at like three or four, so that's why I still feel sick.
SPEAKER_03You're at three or four percent, then I'm lower than that. No times. Yeah, it's like I have a long way to go. But if I had to prepare week to week, I there I couldn't do anything else. No, that's why it's the full-time job. Yeah. So it's you know, because you get an hour here, an hour there, because you have all the things you have to do during the day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But when you're doing it every week, you find a rhythm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, it's a little bit better. I mean, it's like, you know, I don't it's like doing facials. Yeah. It would take me a long time, but for you, it just comes now, you know, it's some of the stuff comes naturally. You don't have to prepare as much now because you've done it for so long.
SPEAKER_02True. Okay.
unknownTrue.
SPEAKER_03Hand me a baby.
SPEAKER_02But finding the time to study, you know, like I feel like it's been a luxury to have this much time to study for it. But then what also happens, then you have way too much material for a Sunday.
SPEAKER_03And it's like overstudying for a test. You're like, I can't look at this one more time. Don't change it. It's fine. Just go with it.
SPEAKER_00You use about 10% of what you're doing. And you can't use it all.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's so true.
SPEAKER_02I now, because I've had so much time, I just want to download everything that I've gleaned over these last two months. I just want to be like, take it all. Because there's so much, but I guess that's why we read his word for it.
SPEAKER_03I'm also at the point where I still have to type it out word for word. Do you type it out word for it? Transcript, transcription. I did type it out word for word, but I'm not. You're not gonna keep it in too. See, I would have forgotten the stuff. I would have forgotten.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's why I'm gonna ask the Holy Spirit, like, be my editor. Like, but it's all in there. What do you want to come out?
SPEAKER_01It's good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, true.
SPEAKER_01That's phase two, Kelly. You're phase one right now. Transcript, you're good. But the thing is, no, no, here's the thing though. Like, this weekend though, you definitely pull it from your notes and just spoke from the heart too. Yeah, but I live. That's when we all start liking it.
SPEAKER_03And like I'm listening out of the wrong way.
SPEAKER_02Those are the terrible curriculums that we don't like. That says, say this to the kids. Say that. And now I will say this.
SPEAKER_01It reminds me of a Joe Biden speech.
SPEAKER_02We're not listening. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Reminds me of a Joe Biden speech.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01Sorry. Oh Lord. Oh, yeah. Pastors not here. I just said that.
SPEAKER_03Preaching with a teleprompter would probably be really beneficial, actually.
SPEAKER_01Oh my goodness, guys.
SPEAKER_03Did we get that? Maybe. But I think they scroll. It's not like you can like.
SPEAKER_00You can actually get a program on your like for your iPad and that's like a teleprompter. Oh yeah, your phone, everything. You can set the motion how fast you want it to move. I have a pastor friend of mine that uses the phone.
SPEAKER_03That would actually be a good idea.
SPEAKER_02I think Kelly's thing she'd like to teach more often.
SPEAKER_03That's not what I'm saying. But I no, I don't know if I could have it like run up. You know what I mean? Like when you're too fast.
SPEAKER_01When you slow down, it actually slows down. Your voice is a good idea.
SPEAKER_03I mean, why is why am I surprised? Of course you can play.
SPEAKER_01And it slows down. But like that's great if you're doing a video, teaching to a video, but like teaching to people? Like why is she just staring at that screen? I'm over here.
SPEAKER_02And so but uh anyway, I was thrilled to hear you say that you were gonna do this more often.
SPEAKER_03I technically did not say that.
SPEAKER_02Technically did. We all heard you. It's recorded.
SPEAKER_00I heard it.
SPEAKER_03It gives me so much anxiety. And it should be. You know what gives me more anxiety than preaching? What? The stupid announcements.
SPEAKER_02Well, that, yes.
SPEAKER_00You know what?
SPEAKER_02I agree.
SPEAKER_03No one pays attention. No one even cares. But then they're like, Well, I didn't know blah, blah, blah what's happening. That's because you don't listen to the announcements at the end.
SPEAKER_00I had somebody ask me recently here, you get nervous when you're gonna speak. I said, I don't get nervous when I'm gonna speak. I'll tell you what I when I get nervous when I have to do the announcements.
SPEAKER_03Darn announcements.
SPEAKER_00I'm like, it's the easiest thing to do.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I don't know what it is. It's not easy to do.
SPEAKER_00But it's like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I'm glad I feel I feel validated. Yeah, you got exact dates
Paul Writes Like A Pastor
SPEAKER_02and exact times you gotta bring more.
SPEAKER_03I think it's because no one's listening.
SPEAKER_01No one's listening. All right, 1 Corinthians chapter 10. Jody, you're up this weekend. And so you want to kick us off in conversation?
SPEAKER_02Oh man, I mean, we're talking about here's the thing that I was I've been thinking about, and I kind of mentioned it in the last podcast, is that I've been thinking about Paul as a pastor. Pastor Paul. Like we're reading this letter. We don't know Paul. We've never laid eyes on Paul. He's never laid eyes on us. But that is not the context of this letter. He knows these people. And it just, I'm thinking of my pastor, Pastor Jamie. He knows all the people in our congregation. So if he would write a letter to us, he knows us, he cares about us, he loves us, and he's like, guys, listen to my letter. And then the second letter, no, no, no, you're missing understanding me. That's not what I meant. That's not what I said. Listen to my channel. I love Clark Kelly.
SPEAKER_01It's honey. She's like, I would there would not be a second letter.
SPEAKER_03But that's why he's like, I was gonna come, you guys, but I'm not going to now. Maybe he was too mad. Exactly.
SPEAKER_02I need some space before I see you in person.
SPEAKER_00But you brought out a good point. I spent eight, a year and a half with you guys.
SPEAKER_02A year and a half.
SPEAKER_00Laying all these things out. And now you put him in this letter with all these questions of the very things that I've answered all of your questions. I've answered them all, but I'll do it once more.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. He loves people more than me. That's why. Yeah. But it's like your kids, you're not like, put your shoes away, put your shoes away, put your shoes away. Like how I don't know how many times I would tell you, take your shoes and put them in the closet every day. You do it every day, and we still can't figure that out. I mean, so we're not like that.
SPEAKER_00It takes uh what do you say? How many? A thousand and sometimes. A thousand and five.
SPEAKER_03But I mean by the time you're eight years old, I think that's it though, a thousand and five times away. Oh, yeah, it might not be. You're right. It might be eighteen.
SPEAKER_02You're right, right.
SPEAKER_01Is it why Paul opens up chapter 10 talking about their ancestors?
SPEAKER_02Well, so I love that. And and so I love that you brought that up because you would think, you would think, if I saw the ten plagues in Egypt, if I saw my people be busted out of slavery, if I saw a pillar of cloud, if I saw a pillar, there's no way I I would mess this up, right? You absolutely would. Like he just saying, you know what? Even these people who saw all these things, they shifted their gaze from the one who freed them from slavery and found themselves learn from them. Don't get disqualified like they did.
SPEAKER_00And I think too, how many of us have dealt with people that talked about, well, I grew up, my family was this or that. I grew up. So they talked about their heritage. But that doesn't mean you have a this personal. So they're leaning on their heritage rather than the present personality.
SPEAKER_02Yes, which is what Kelly said last week. You've got to encounter over and over. That's what sustained Paul was continually encountering. A one-time encounter is not going to sustain you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong. I mean, it's three chapters of him answering one question. Correct?
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_01I think it I mean, because the last time I last time I was presenting the question, eight, nine, and ten is still responding to the question should we eat meat that's been sacrificed to idols? So we're dealing with this idol issue in our lives for three whole chapters.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's it's like, again, you said, you know, we Paul's dealing with, you know, idols of eating meat and all the own current. What are those? Can you we talk about those?
SPEAKER_01What are I I mean, you mentioned it a little bit, like the phone, but like how can we practically understand idols in today's context?
SPEAKER_02I mean, the definition that I like is Tim Kellers. Is and that's what I said on Sunday. It whatever captures the imagination of your heart. When did you say this?
SPEAKER_01Did I miss this? Was it Tommy?
SPEAKER_02On Sunday when I preached.
SPEAKER_01Kelly preached the side.
SPEAKER_03She's not following along.
SPEAKER_01Hello, Sean. Yeah, when you preached, what were you getting? Yeah, when you preached, you said what?
SPEAKER_02I said about an idol is something that you are looking to to meet your needs. You are look and this captures it, it's your focus now. And so the one that I love is the statue of Apollo. He that God is the ideal man. So this is our culture. This is literally our culture. They want the perfect body, they want the perfect business, they want the perfect look, they want the perfect image, they want the perfect speaking eloquently, they want to be their best. So their focus is on that, and it has shifted from Yahweh.
SPEAKER_01No, at teen camp, I'm in the juniors and seniors room, and they're telling me, like, oh Sean, you know what? Like, your eyes like actually you should do like this thing with your eyes that help you out. Well, your jaw, you got a good jawline. And I'm like, what?
Ancient Idols In Modern Clothes
SPEAKER_01But this is boys. I'm like, Yeah. What are we talking about? This is crazy. I mean, seriously, social media.
SPEAKER_02Were they trying to manipulate their bodies?
SPEAKER_01I don't know what they're doing because I quickly ignored the conversation and said, fellas, we're me this is not the kind like what are we doing? I was so confused. But I'm like, Am I in a room full of teenage girls or not? No, but the guy really like snatch would be a girl word, but like they were using words that I didn't even understand.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's a girl word for it. I forget what they call the boys.
SPEAKER_00And I didn't want to go word to understand. How much our culture is image focused. Image focus. Rather than heart focused. What you look like is more important than who you are.
SPEAKER_03I think too, like a modern day idol would be abortion. Why you because we're sacrificing children to Moloch, is what they used to do. They would take their children, literally sacrifice them to Moloch. So I'm like, it just changes form. Same thing. We're still sacrificing to and getting, you know, the abortion is a huge moneymaker. So it's never gonna go away. It makes too much money. And so we just took people into sacrificing their children.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the object is still me and my what I want. Now I feel like for Moloch in the olden time, like they were doing it for different reasons, like they were sacrificing their children for maybe not saying stuff though, right?
SPEAKER_03Like so they would get a blessing from him. Yeah, so it is the same, isn't it? It just changes it's the same. They're old. The only market school thing I ever like is old New Day Old Demons. It's the same demons.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's just something that I like to re and I don't talk about on Sunday, is like for chapter eight, Pastor Sean, when you and Shelly were talking about, and he says, No, you're right. An idol is not anything. Well, then he kind of circles back in chapter 10. He's like, an idol's not anything. Yeah. But what's behind the idol is still something. And I don't, he uses the word koinania, which is intimacy. I don't want you intimate. You can be intimate with Christ, you can be intimate with the demon, too. So good. And so that intimacy, like you are connecting. Um I had a thought there, but I just lost it.
SPEAKER_01It was good on Sunday. It'll come back.
SPEAKER_02Oh, but what I was saying is that there it is, Mike, that quick. Well, like you are so when you and this I had a really hard time with it. It says section and 10, and he talks about you have the right to do anything, eat any meat, you know, in the mar in the market without raising questions of conscience. If somebody invites you, go eat. If someone says to you it's been offered in sacrifice, then don't eat it for the sake of them. But then these are the two questions, and so I'm not the only one. Like scholars, everybody are like, this is hard to translate. Because then he says, um, for why is my freedom being judged by another's conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced? Because of something I thank God for. And it's like he's unsaying what he just said. Oh, yeah. And so most say that that's um not in for why is my freedom being judged? It's more like for what reason? For what reason are you being judged? Because you're affecting your brother and your sister. That's the reason. So it's not, he's not undoing what he's saying. It's just using that rhetorician to say, think about what you're doing. Yeah, this is this reason. You're affecting your your siblings in Christ because of your freedom to eat this meat.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. The sin isn't eating the meat, the sin is affecting your brother and sister.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's the other thing I was gonna say. So the demon behind the idol, demons aren't reproducing. Right. They are they're not able to have this. So they are ancient. So it is the idol of self, it is the idol of abortion, it is the idol of greed and sex and all of it. Ancient. Nothing's new. They're just shinier and 2026 looking like. Yeah. True.
SPEAKER_01Very true.
SPEAKER_02And it's as old as time. I mean, it's Adam and Eve. Look at this shiny thing. Doesn't that look good? And you take your gaze off and you're like, you know what, that does look good.
SPEAKER_01How how do we do an honest inventory in our own life, you know what I mean, in regards to like w how are we entertaining idols? Because I think it's a lot more masked, you know what I mean? Not as obvious, I I feel like. And maybe it's just because I'm reading the context in a different culture, so it seems obvious to me, you know? And uh but how do I how would I how would I do an inventory in regards to like what really is dear and near to my heart?
SPEAKER_02What are you watching? What are you listening to? Jesus, the only idol that he mentioned when he was on earth was um money. And he said, Where your treasure is, there your heart is. Follow the trail, follow the money trail. And so I think it's a really good interest.
SPEAKER_01So where you're investing your time.
SPEAKER_02Where you're investing your look at your calendar, look at your money, look at your schedule.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Then you can see what's most important to you. It might not be the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And that I mean, I can think that can happen to any of us.
SPEAKER_03And I think that we forget like the devil is cunning and deceptive. And deceptive We think deceit is like this so grand, but deceit is so subtle and subtle, and it happens easy and then it can grow. And so we're like, And it can start as a good thing. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna be deceived by that. For the church, you should spend all your time don't rest. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01At camp they talked about this, you know, like conf you know, at Camp obviously one of the nights they're talking about confessing kids your sins, like, you know, asking for forgiveness. Well, oftentimes it can't, but it's big things like, you know, you've you've you've um stolen. Yeah. But it was really cool. The communicator talked about the really small things.
How To Audit Your Heart
SPEAKER_01Like the things that like start off something, you know what I mean? That like turn into big things.
SPEAKER_03Just the little compromises.
SPEAKER_01Just the small little things. We're gonna deal with just the small things, which it was I thought was so good.
SPEAKER_02Like, which is why Paul says flee, flee from idolatry. Don't tiptoe, don't look, don't keep looking at it.
SPEAKER_01No, turn it off. Yeah. So good. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I thought you were going somewhere with that.
SPEAKER_03So you're gonna have to remember what I was saying.
SPEAKER_02You were talking about so cunning, so deceptive.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it just starts, I don't know. I yeah, it starts so small, and you can think, oh, I'm never gonna get there. I'm never gonna get there. And then one day you're like, oh wow, I didn't think I would go that far. Whatever that might be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Whether uh, you know, whatever it is, how you spend your money, how you what you watch, what you listen to. I think my biggest pet peeve, well, I have a lot of them, but one of them is like what my what adults, like full grown adults will talk about that they watch on Netflix or on whatever streaming thing. And they're like, have you watched the show? And in my mind, I'm like, uh no, because I I automatically know that there's nasty, filthy stuff in that show. Like, why would I watch it? How come you don't know that? Oh, this is the best show. I'm like, wait, what? And we trick ourselves into thinking that this is it's idolatry. Like you're watching sexual and more immorality, whatever else, it meant drugs, killing, or whatever it is, you know, and we entertain ourselves with it, and then we're going to be surprised when our lives play out in the very entertainment that we're watching.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And the freedom that this so this Christian enjoys. And they're in the body of Christ, and they're seeing younger people who are like, oh, we can watch that.
SPEAKER_03And they don't have I mean it is, and it's lots of other people.
SPEAKER_02It made me think, you know, like the small things, like the Israelites, they saw all these amazing things, and then they're like, you know what? We're sick of eating this food. And how fast that happens? And then all of a sudden they're having sex in front of an idol. You know, you're like, how did that happen?
SPEAKER_03You walked across the Red Sea on dry ground, not on muddy ground, on dry ground. And then you're across and you're like, Can we go back to Egypt? It was way more fun there. I mean, we do that all the time, right? Like things get hard. That's why I think I love verse uh nine. Wait, what verse is this? 19. I have do not have my readers on. That would be verse 13, you guys, because I cannot see. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience, and God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out. I think we love like, God's not gonna tempt me with more than I can handle. You hear that all the time, right? Nope. This is what people say. They said, God said they the word says he's not gonna give me more than I can handle.
SPEAKER_02That's not what it says. That is not what it says.
SPEAKER_03That's not what it says at all. And it does say he's not gonna uh will not allow temptation to be more than you can stand, but it says, but when you are tempted, he will show you a way out that so you can endure. And that's when we forget. Like we're tempted and we just do that temptation. Like, how often are you like, well, that's gonna feel good, or that's gonna look good, or I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to. Yes, that's true. But God is telling you, I will give you a way out so that you can adore, endure, but you have to come to me.
SPEAKER_02I think that's the part that we also miss, so that you can endure. It doesn't mean maybe that you're actually away. Right. Like this could be a testing, a trial. Like Jesus was temp tested for 40 days so he could endure the three years that were coming.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. True. We forget that we need to turn to God.
SPEAKER_02I hate endurance training. Pastor Mike, you look like you were gonna say something.
SPEAKER_00No, I was just thinking about the unattended little things that I I go back to. I I think I quoted this when I spoke a few weeks ago about from Hemingway's book when the the guy was asked how he went bankrupt, and he said gradually and then suddenly.
SPEAKER_02That was so good.
SPEAKER_00And I think that's where a lot of life, you know, the things that happen interests aren't the many times our failures aren't just that happen. It's from the little un little things that we didn't pay attention to and make adjustments for.
SPEAKER_03Do you not think that I mean ninety-nine point nine percent of marriages, that's why they fail?
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Because you unattended to each other. You didn't attend to them. And then you wake up and you're like, I don't like that person anymore. Well, you love them at one point.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I understand there are some things in there where like you should never marry, whatever. But typically a marriage is gonna fall apart just like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I had I'll never forget this idea. I had a couple that were on quickly on their way to a divorce and came, had an appointment with me. won't go into all of it, but it was because of dirty socks. It was dirty socks.
SPEAKER_02Tipped the straw.
SPEAKER_00It was the thing that was gonna because he he was a construction worker, come home, take his boots off, take his pull his socks off, leave them on the floor and she would have to pick them up, turn them, you know, to wash them, all this. But but it wasn't about the dirty socks. What it was about was I'm feel little by little I'm feeling less. I'm feeling like you don't really care about me, honor me, all of this stuff. And so it was about dirty socks. But it wasn't about it wasn't about the dirty socks. It was just those little things unattended to that came to a point that almost broke.
SPEAKER_02It didn't break them?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02Praise the Lord.
SPEAKER_00No, we were able to get it turned around and he it was like it it was, I believe it was the Holy Spirit. It was like an epiphy he got that night. It's like, oh my gosh. He even said, oh my gosh, I didn't realize what I was doing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I feel like really that's what Paul's teaching in eight, nine and ten is like if we are now followers of Christ, we're called to
The Way Out Of Temptation
SPEAKER_03serve each other. Well that's we're not called to serve ourselves and that's what we want to do. And you serve yourselves it's gonna but if you're serving each other, I don't think you could fail.
SPEAKER_02Pastor Sean, back to your question like how do we? And it's exactly that it's the community. Yep totally like we weren't built to do this alone because we're blind to our own sin. And so when we submit ourselves to community we submit ourselves to a pastor we submit ourselves to serving then there's we give people access so that they can see and then also our eyes aren't just on us. We're seeing other people too yeah and then we're reminded over and over I love how you said that Pastor Kelly over and over you come back to the Lord come back to the Lord. It's the same like reveal in me Lord where am I missing it for me being in this chapter 10 okay I wouldn't have thought I was worshiping idols. Lord where are they? Where are the spots that I'm not seeing right now I'm seeing them because I've been saturated in this you know what I love you reminded me this one time and this could be an idol.
SPEAKER_03This is the idol in my life I don't know what the idol would be called but because I love to be alone and I love to not talk to people for hours at a time and I you were saying like and I was like but Jody people just love to be alone you're like yes but that's your sinful nature coming out because you want to be alone and I was like oh I only know that because it takes one to know one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But you we don't think about that as sin.
SPEAKER_02But it's also sinful when you're always with other people true you need that's your sinful self that's you need to be alone yeah that's true.
SPEAKER_03I call that the Sabbath killing Sabbath every day I need it every day 12 hours a day one Sabbath. One the other ones you have to go out and serve people serve each other. That's true.
SPEAKER_02It's a rhythm.
SPEAKER_00But I think too in some in Paul goes on to maybe getting ahead of self here but at the end of the chapter 10 he begins to deal with you know some of the things of you know how we how we should live through all of this and everything. And I think one of the things that we can do kind of going back to a little bit earlier in our conversation is we can s we can kind of segregate or segment holiness you know and it's something I've thought about late have how our culture, our Christian culture, how many messages you hear on holiness you know we think that's old school we think that's so good. You know legalism legalism, all this stuff, but God's a holy God we have to remember that. He's not going to make an adjustment for our unrighteousness. He's gonna call us up to his standard not lower his standard to our standard just because we're living in 2026.
SPEAKER_01Aaron Ross Powell to say like don't tell me how to live when we when you preach a holiness gospel don't teach me how to live and it's not about again not about legalism.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01It's about this is who God is it's interesting and I don't know if you're gonna take care of this or I know Pastor Jamie's got chapter 11 but like in most of what I'm reading the verse the first what five verse five words in chapter eleven, Paul says imitate me as I also imitate Christ. And I I mean that's a push towards like hey I'm I'm moving in this direction of holiness now follow me. You know what I mean where it's like that's why this whole eight nine I mean he wraps it up with this incredible phrase.
SPEAKER_02And so talking about holiness, you know I it's it makes an attractiveness if we look like the culture then there's nothing different about us. And so that is you know that word called syncretism where you like sync up. So you're doing some things I go to church on Sunday I check my horoscope daily I go to church on Sunday and I, you know, I don't know what the other examples are, but you're like doing things that are the culture I go to church on Sunday but I live with my boyfriend just like everybody else does. There's nothing different that's what was so staggering about the people of God when he called them out you're my holy people you look different you do Sabbath. It was so different from everybody else. And so he's calling like I want you to be koinania with me and me alone. And still in 2026 we still find adultery shocking like with all the things that we'll accept we're still like that's no you don't cheat on other people well that's the strong words that he's using with us. You're intimate he tells us that earlier in chapter six you're partnering Christ with a prostitute you're partnering Christ with the the way that you're living and that's adultery and I'm jealous for you not jealous in a negative way jealous in a positive way I see that that is going to drive you it's gonna be a slave driver for you. I don't want that for you partner with me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah well that's even what Jesus says in Matthew 11 towards the end of 28 29 30 because come with me walk with watch me watch how I do it walk with me learn the unforced rhythms of grace. He said I want I want you to this is the life it wasn't so arduous. It wasn't something that oh I have to do this no he says this is this is what really what freedom is if you learn my life if you learn the life that I've shown you and brought to you and everything he said this is what freedom is I remember when I finally understood that because I never understood that take my yoke upon you my teaching is easy and light and I always you know you got the yoke for the oxen and I'm like okay I'm in a yoke with Jesus I'm on one side he's on the other he's obviously more powerful so he's gonna do all the work and that's not it at all the yoke is his teaching he's saying listen
Holiness Without Syncretism
SPEAKER_00to my teaching and live and flourish I'm not trying to say you can't do this and this and then this I'm saying you can.
SPEAKER_02And that's what I love about this chapter in chapter 10 he's saying partner with me. It's not about the eternal prize only it's about here and now there's stuff to do now. Like do you want to do this with me? Do you want to partner with me? Because I'm doing stuff.
SPEAKER_00You'll see this when you're in Israel let's go if you go to the wall I'm going to you'll see these rabbis calling for they'll I think it's vignette was it and what it they have they have to have so many and what they're calling them to is their yoke because they they will teach there's these little alcoves off of the recruiting for students? Yeah to teach them but it's called they're calling it what they say is they're calling them for their yoke.
SPEAKER_02I love that could I sit down if I hear them say that?
SPEAKER_00Probably not you're too gentile joke but I know when I was there I was and so I asked our guide I said what are they doing and said they're calling them the f to their yoke to calling them to teach.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow that's so neat that's very cool.
SPEAKER_00Any more thoughts I know I'm trying to look to see like what did I miss what I missed what did make it to the message Jody that you want to share let me see I think for me I'll I'll throw this out there in in actually verses 23 through 30 it's kind of what you know Paul's talking about navigating these gray areas you know in life and we have those right that's kind of what we've been talking about. What are the gray areas the areas that sometimes don't seem like they're as defined as other areas and um I I was thinking about this thought is that one of the greatest dangers when we start believing we've conquered something that we must still be attentive to crucifying daily and I think that that's kind of back to the gradual of the suddenly is what and I've been thinking a lot about that lately is what is it that I think, okay, I've okay but yet it can have the susceptibility of creeping back in if I don't crucify it daily, whatever that is, whether it's it's fear, whether it's you know lust, whether it's pride, whether what is it that could that can creep back in if I don't stay attentive to it. Yeah. And that's one of the things that Paul and the whole thing about the idolatry is how much are you allowing it to creep back into your life?
SPEAKER_02Aaron Ross Powell And some of the things like I know I didn't mention this if you're um like the gray area is like can I do this? Should I do that? Should I not? And so anything that you're considering, what does the Bible say first and foremost? If it doesn't, what does your conscience say? What is your conscience telling you? Because that's the Holy Spirit He will speak to you. But then the next question is what does my weakness require? Is it wise? Is it beneficial? Can I watch this show? I know who I am and where my tendencies may stray no scary no sexual like I don't need to go there. So that's going to be a no for me. So anyway is it beneficial but then also like what is where's my weakness can I handle that? We're so good at that with kids with protecting them like oh that's too much you know I remember when my kids would be like how come I can't watch that how come it says it's rated R? How come you guys are watching something that's you know nasty or sexy or whatever I'm like you can't understand it. Like they're doing espionage in different countries your brain can't comprehend you know so like can your weakness we protect the little ones we need to protect our brothers and sisters too. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well that you I'll go back to chapter six in verse 12 Paul says all things might be lawful but they're not all profitable. Yeah and he says it again yeah yeah he repeats the exact same so you I think you you know we it's good for us to evaluate is this profitable for my life? It might be maybe it's lawful quotation marks but is it really profitable? And I've learned from my life I evaluate the season I'm in to what is profitable and not profitable. I don't watch any TV and it's not because I'm being legalistic about anything but for the season I'm in it's just not profitable for me. I don't I see it as a waste of time. Yeah and you know for me at my age time is time's of the essence time's of the essence that's right thanks Jamie So what is it you know for you evaluate things that are profitable for your life and I think that's the question asked is this what is this going to do for my life?
SPEAKER_01As a as a husband as and think long term and long term you know sometimes you're like is it profitable yeah it's gonna profit me right now not good yeah it's not gonna be good
Gray Areas And Wise Boundaries
SPEAKER_01so true so true. Uh this culture must have been uh what uh to potentially beat the American culture and self-centeredness because he's talking about you know yeah it's gonna come up again too in like 15 we'll be like how they're treating the Lord Supper it's like they think really highly of themselves.
SPEAKER_03And you would think that we might be the only culture to do that but again there's nothing new under the sun.
SPEAKER_02I mean I think all semester we were calling this instead of the first Corinthians we're calling it the Colombians. Yeah we call it the Columbians it's the Columbians.
SPEAKER_00Exceptionalism is alive and well alive and well it's alive and well who wants to praise out Pastor Mike he's the oldest.
SPEAKER_02Wow the wisest to well I don't know about that but this is the last thing I'll say so I discovered um in Psalm 78 it talks about just kind of it's a long chapter talks all about their wilderness wanderings and I just kind of like was picking out all the things that they were doing the Israelites who were in the wilderness because that's how Paul talks so much about them at the beginning they tested God. They rebelled they did not observe they were faithless they twisted they provoked they moved him to jealousy and provoked him um with their idols to wrath and like that is we don't want to test God like that. Just like infidelity provokes your partner provokes your spouse that's how intimate we are with God and when we are partnering him with other things he is jealous for us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah that's good.
SPEAKER_02We don't want to provoke like that. It's painful good stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah okay let's pray Jesus um as we you know we sit here and have this conversation today I I think um first and foremost it's the realization of how much you love us. The desires that you have or the desires the longings that you have for our lives to to move progress into this life that that you've provided for us you desire for us. And so I thank you that um Holy Spirit you help us to be attentive to the things around us to the things that are influencing our lives that may be distracting us pulling our hearts away um to a to something that's we can find ourselves being contrary to the will of God to the desire of God for our lives and so um I thank you that we're constantly reminded of that. And I I pray that as people listen to this podcast, I thank you that you will speak to them maybe something deeper than our words, something more profound than our words, but you'll speak to them about their lives. And so I I thank you for uh what you're doing through this series and uh everybody that's been a part of this series teaching in this series I just thank you that uh how you've used um all the voices to bring to light your truth your love and your grace in Jesus' name amen.
